God is NOT fair

We Don’t Get What We Deserve
For the past few decades, the big trend in corporate America has been “pay for performance.” In other words, the more you do on the job or the better your results for the organization – the greater your compensation.
Pervasive Pay for Performance Mentality
The underlying idea of this trend has been a fundamental component of capitalism since its inception. For example, the more a sales representative sells, the higher their bonus. When a professional athlete performs exceptionally on the field, court, track or ice, their pre-negotiated contract incentives are triggered to produce a cash windfall as well as larger advertising endorsements.
Even our children are indoctrinated into this pay-for-performance mentality when we encourage them to study and pay attention in class. Such conduct enables them to get good grades, which will enable them to graduate high school and get into a good college, followed by a good job…et cetera.
Additionally, politicians routinely play the “fair and equitable” card by playing to our dependence on this model when they claim statements such as, “everyone needs to pay their fair share for this or that program ” or “those who earn the most, have an obligation to pay the most – it’s only fair ”
The reason why this pay-for-performance belief is so embedded within our culture is because we think it’s an equitable and fair model for life. Simply stated, if you do good work and work hard – then you’ll be rewarded accordingly; however, if you’re a lazy slacker who causes problems and doesn’t contribute or advance the group – you won’t be.
As a culture we universally embrace "pay for performance" because we believe it’s fair.
Pay for Performance Doesn't Play in Heaven
Perhaps that’s the main reason why it's currently so uncool, unpopular and out of vogue in America to believe in God – because God is not fair. In other words, He doesn’t give us what we deserve or earned.
Specifically, the Judeo-Christian God does not reward us for how good we are; what we can do for Him; how holy we try to be or any other religious trappings that humans try to conjure up as a way to earn our own redemption. The reason being is that we can’t earn it.
Consider the following passages from the Old Testament that explain why God is not fair as we understand and apply the concept of fairness.
- Psalm 103:10, “ He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.”
-
Lamentations 3:22, “The Lord’s loving kindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail.”
God Wants Better Than We Deserve
The reason that God does not treat us fairly as we deserve, is because He wants more than that for us – He wants to treat us better than we deserve. In total, the story of the Bible is not that of a hanging judge looking to levy the maximum penalty for the smallest infraction.
En masse, it’s a story of a supremely-loving judge who willingly submits to his own law. So much so that when a reckless stranger (namely me, you and everyone) commits the worst crimes against the law in His court a penalty must be paid. But in this court, the loving Judge asks His son – who happens to be our defense attorney on the case – to accept the death penalty on our behalf, for this specific crime or any future crime we could commit. Stunningly, the attorney agrees. Do we deserve that?
However, once we accept that ultimate plea bargain, we can leave the court and punishment behind. And every time we do something wrong, we simply throw ourselves on the mercy of the court and remind the Judge of the plea bargain – and the charges are dropped again. Is that fair?
In the Judge’s eyes, the only thing worse than the initial crimes we’ve committed is rejecting the sacrifice of the defense attorney on our behalf – which the Judge allows us to do at our own loss and detriment because mercy can’t be forced, it must be accepted. Do we deserve that?
Westerners Prefer to Work for Redemption
Regardless, this courtroom scenario outlined above seems ridiculous and makes no sense to the modern, pay-for-performance mindset of those of us who embrace the hard-working, boot-strap ethos of capitalist America. We simply can’t wrap our minds around it because it’s supremely unfair – in our favor.
So rather than embrace and accept this incredible FREE offer that is there for the asking, we dismiss it as too good to be true because it’s seemingly irrational and doesn’t make sense.
Maybe that’s why it takes faith to believe that God is ultimately unfair, of that I’m fairly certain.

Life is not fair. As you stated, God is not fair. We should be thankful for that. Great expression, hub!
Oh, how, Jesus, loves us! Thank you, Jesus!
This is a great hub.
"Specifically, the Judeo-Christian God does not reward us for how good we are; what we can do for Him; how holy we try to be or any other religious trappings that humans try to conjure up as a way to earn our own redemption. The reason being is that we can’t earn it."
Excellent point. Most Christians just don't get this.
"In the Judge’s eyes, the only thing worse than the initial crimes we’ve committed is rejecting the sacrifice of the defense attorney on our behalf – which the Judge allows us to do at our own loss and detriment because mercy can’t be forced, it must be accepted. Do we deserve that?"
Another excellent point. Many people don't understand the concept of grace or mercy. They just don't get it. All we really need to do is say "Thank you Lord" and then live our lives in such a way as to show our sincere gratitude.
Never ask God to be fair
If God were fair, there would be no people
there would be nothing
The only reason that God loves you is because Jesus has satisfied Him for you
The only way God would be satisfied is if we(sinners) died or if Jesus came down and became sin for us, which He did
so don't ever ask God to be fair, even if He doesn't give you what you ask for because He does not owe us anything.
I should post my own blog... right?
not trying to be provokative but I just wanted to write.
Beautifully done! And aren't we all as Christians, the blessed beneficiaries of God's unfairness! Thank you for this unique perspective on God's perfect grace! I love it!
Good hub. I like the way you present things with such a fresh outlook.
Amen, brother! What's that old saying? "Fair" is just a place where they sell corn dogs and cotton candy?
I certainly have to say I can appreciate your unique perspective on God and you also pulled me into the hub. I had read it twice and kudos for a well writen hub! It is a reminder of what we should not forget when it comes to God and how he can also be.
Corporate America has forgotten God's laws because they do believe he is unjust. Sad thing is forgetting God's word is what is causing our Country to fail. When our Country stood on the word, look how prosperous they were? When they have forgotten the word look at the direction it has taken. Thumbs Up! :)
A wonderful reminder! Thank God we get mercy instead of justice! Thank you for finding me and being my fan. I wanted to see a bit of your writing before I became your fan. HA!HA! I saw your title and I said to myself,"Well if he is dishonoring God, I'll not follow him." HA! OF COURSE I AM going to follow you! Wonderful hub! This had my attention with the title and on til the end. look forward to reading some more of your work. awesome!RATE UP!
great hub, loved how you pieced everything together. It is sad that much of the church gets saved, and then forget where they came from and treat others with contempt instead of the same amount of love and grace that has been given to them. We look at the judgement that is to come and to me when the unbelieving world comes into contact with so Powerful, Pure, Passionate Love, Grace, Mercy, that they're hearts will melt before them as they in a heartbeat realize what they missed out on. This should only spur us who believe to be more vigilant and consistant in our love for a dying world that will miss what we will experience. The translation of His love into us and then into the world will be the determining factor of truely how lovingly unfair God surely is. God as lover, sends Jesus as lover who sends Holy Spirit as lover to teach us just what real love is. Amazing, don't you think. Blessings my friend, St. L.
Your hubs are like fresh manna. You have a way of laying out very basic faith principles in ways that challenge me to a greater living faith. Gift you got there!
Very interesting hub. God Bless You.
Fantastic hub! Loved the song too! It is a wonder that when He looks at me He sees the righteousness of Christ! Glad you wrote this. Glad I read it!
Voted up & beautiful! tremendously clear & concise. Wonderful hub, look forward to your next one...
I generally steer clear of religious hubs and forums as it is a hot-button area and I believe that everyone has the right to their own opinion whether or not I agree with it. However there was something about how plainly this hub was titled that led me to believe that this was not going to be what the title suggested. I was right! I really enjoyed how you took a topic that many 'believers' complain about and found a way to simplify it to make it easy to understand in today's world. Very well done!
Beautifully said. I can add that in Satan's world, he is not fair, but in a different way. He rewards the wicked and persecutes the righteous.
I love how you made it clear that those who refuse the sacrifice of the defense attorney have no defense. Would anyone say to the Judge, "I don't want you to consider what my attorney did for me. Judge me on my own deeds"? Well, all those reject Christ are doing just that...and will be judged according to their deeds.
Great hub!! Thumbs Up!! God bless you!
Amen.............
